High floors beside open water catch the wind, and light balcony furniture can shift. We set outdoor chairs and tables against the wall rather than by the rail, and point out which pieces are better kept inside on blustery days. Large glass, such as table tops, mirrors and cabinet doors, travels upright in padded covers or between boards, never laid flat under other things.
Inside, new finishes are the main worry. Fresh paint, untouched skirting and new wood or stone floors mark easily, and a scratch made on day one is hard to argue about later. Our crew lays runners from the door to each room, pads door frames and fixes corner guards to walls, and leaves them in place until the last piece is set down.
Summer adds its own pressure, as trucks and loading areas heat up by midday and a new building's loading bay may offer little shade. Our summer moving guide covers what we do about it. The short version: early starts, the truck kept closed between loads, and candles, records and electronics kept out of the heat.
