Plenty of people move in Dubai between June and September. Leases end when they end, and few households can wait for the cooler months. The heat does not stop a move, but it changes how it should be planned, from the start time to the order the boxes come off the truck.
Here is how our crew handles a summer move, which belongings need the most care, and what you can do in the days before to protect your furniture, your electronics and the people carrying them.
Start Early, Before the Heat Builds
On summer jobs we prefer to start early in the morning. The first hours are when the heaviest pieces go down corridors and into the truck, and that work goes better before the loading bay reaches its peak temperature. Outdoor work in direct sun is also restricted at midday through the hottest months under the UAE midday break rule, so the day is planned around it.
Building rules still have the final say. If your tower only offers an afternoon service lift slot, we use the morning for packing and wrapping inside the air conditioned home, then load in the booked window. Ask both buildings for their earliest slots when you apply for your move in and move out permits.
Why Enclosed Vehicles Matter in July and August
An open pickup exposes a sofa to direct sun and blowing dust for the whole drive. Our furniture travels in enclosed trucks, wrapped in blankets, with the doors kept shut between loads.
A closed truck still warms up, so the other half of the answer is time. We load heat sensitive boxes last so they come off first, drive straight between buildings, and avoid leaving a loaded truck parked in the sun waiting for a lift. That is one more reason to book both slots on the same morning.
Humidity adds its own problem near the coast, in places like Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Creek Harbour. Anything carried from a cold, air conditioned room into warm, damp air can gather condensation on its surface, which matters most for electronics and for anything wrapped tightly in plastic.
The Belongings That Suffer Most in the Heat
Most furniture handles a well planned summer move without trouble. A few things do not, and they need either careful packing or a seat in your own air conditioned car.
Pianos are sensitive to heat and humidity too, and usually want tuning once they have settled in the new room. Our piano and specialist removal service plans for that separately.
- Candles and wax items soften, bend and can stain whatever they touch
- Vinyl records warp if they lie flat in a hot box, so pack them upright and snug
- Photographs and prints curl or stick together, especially loose ones
- Leather sofas and chairs sweat under plastic, so we wrap them in breathable blankets
- Solid wood can crack or open at the joints when it heats and dries quickly
- Electronics and batteries dislike heat, and laptops and power banks should travel with you
- Medicines belong in a cool bag in your car, never in the truck
- Plants wilt fast in a closed truck, so load them last and water them early
- Aerosols are pressurised cans and have no place in a hot vehicle
Fridges and Freezers: Defrost, Then Let Them Stand
Switch the fridge and freezer off the day before, empty them and leave the doors open on towels so the ice melts and the inside dries. Wipe them out before the crew arrives. A damp fridge closed up in a warm truck is the quickest route to mould and a smell that lingers.
Fridges travel upright. Once it is in position at the new home, leave it standing before you switch it on so the oil in the compressor can settle. The waiting time depends on the model, so check the manual. Many makers suggest a few hours if it travelled upright and longer if it had to be laid down.
Run down frozen food in the week before, and keep anything you cannot replace in a cool box in your car.
Get Power and Air Conditioning Running Before Move Day
Arriving at a sealed, sun baked apartment with no power is the worst start to a summer move. The crew slows down, wood and leather go from a warm truck into a warmer room, and electronics have nowhere cool to settle.
Arrange the DEWA connection for the new home early and aim to have it live before moving day. Many towers use district cooling billed by a separate provider, so the air conditioning may need its own account as well. In villas, ask the landlord to have the AC units serviced and tested before you take over, and if you can get the keys a day early, switch the AC on so the house is cool when the truck arrives. Our Dubai moving checklist shows where DEWA fits in the weeks before.
Water Breaks Are Part of the Plan, Not a Delay
Carrying a wardrobe down a stairwell with no air conditioning is hard work in July. Our crew takes regular water breaks in the shade or indoors, and the time for them is built into the plan before the day starts, so nobody feels they are holding the job up.
This protects your furniture as much as the crew. A tired, dehydrated mover loses grip and concentration, sweaty hands slip on glass tops and polished wood, and rushed lifting is when door frames get knocked and boxes get dropped. A crew that keeps a steady pace finishes with fewer breakages than one trying to beat the clock.
Heat affects packing materials as well. Tape can lose its hold in a hot truck and cardboard softens in humid air, so on every apartment and villa move in summer we use strong tape, avoid overfilled boxes and keep heavy items in small cartons.
What to Unpack First After a Summer Move
The unpacking order shifts a little when it is hot outside. Deal with anything that may have suffered on the way before you start on the kitchen. If you are planning a move for the hotter months, request a free quote and mention any heat sensitive items, so our supervisor can plan the start time and packing around them.
- Put medicines straight into the fridge or a cool cupboard
- Unwrap leather and wood furniture so trapped moisture can escape
- Open the boxes holding candles, records and photographs and let them cool
- Leave televisions, computers and speakers to reach room temperature before switching on
- Water the plants and keep them out of direct sun for a few days
- Switch on the fridge once it has stood long enough, then make up the beds
