Moving within the same building in Dubai sounds like the easiest move there is. No truck, no road, both sets of keys in your hand on the same morning. Then the management office asks for a move out permit and a move in permit, the goods lift is free only from nine until twelve, and the corridor on your floor is carpeted.
We do plenty of these: three floors up, two lines across, a bigger unit in the next core. They are common in Business Bay, Jumeirah Lake Towers and Dubai Creek Harbour. The work is shorter than a move across the city, and that is why it needs a plan. Short jobs tempt everyone into carrying things loose, and loose is how lift panels get marked.
Two Permits, or One Form That Covers Both
Most towers treat a move inside the building as what it is on paper: you leave one unit and enter another. That usually means a move out permit for the old flat and a move in permit for the new one, even though the lift and the lobby are the same. Some offices issue a single internal transfer form instead, so ask which it is in writing.
The answer decides how many deposits you pay. The new unit also needs its own tenancy contract registered with Ejari, which the building will want to see before it approves the move in permit, or the title deed if you own it. Our post on Dubai move in and move out permits covers the file. Allow the lead time you would give a move across town.
- Whether the building issues one internal permit or two
- The deposit on each permit and how it comes back
- The Ejari certificate or title deed for the new unit
- The hours the building allows move traffic in the lift
One Goods Lift, Needed Twice in the Same Day
A tower usually has one service lift, and it is the only route for both halves of your move. Buildings book those lifts in slots, and at the end of a month the slots go quickly. A job running from the old flat into the new one wants a single long booking, not two short ones with a gap between them.
Half an hour when nobody may use the lift is half an hour of your wardrobe standing in a corridor. Ask for the slot in one email and have the start and finish times written back to you. Where the office gives two separate windows, we size the crew so each one is used fully and the gap is spent dismantling.
Corridors, Lobbies and the Floors You Share
On a normal move the delicate part is a truck and a street. Here it is a carpeted corridor, a stone lift lobby and two door frames that belong to the building rather than to you. Towers often hold a refundable deposit against this sort of damage, and a scuff on a lift panel is easy to cause and awkward to argue about.
So the crew protects the route first: runners across the lobby and both corridors, padding on the lift car, corner guards on the two entrances. Trolleys and furniture skates take the weight. We stage inside the units, not in the shared space, because a fire door propped open with a carton is the quickest way to have security stop the job.
Pack It as Though a Truck Were Coming
The real risk in a same building move is the thinking it invites. It is only three floors, so the glasses travel in an open crate, the television goes up in somebody's arms, the chest of drawers is wheeled along with the drawers still in it. That is where breakages happen.
Pack to the standard you would use for a move out to Mudon or Al Nahda. Cartons closed and labelled with the new unit number, glass wrapped piece by piece, screens in padded boxes, beds and wardrobes taken apart with their fittings bagged to the item they came off. Mattresses go in bags, because a shared corridor floor is not clean. The only thing you get to drop is the road time.
Loose items are the exception worth making. A sofa, a dining table and a mattress can go up blanket wrapped and stretch filmed without a carton, which is how our loading and unloading crews handle them anyway. Anything that can tip, slide or scratch is in a box or it is wrapped.
The One Real Advantage: Both Doors Open at Once
Here is what an internal move gives you that no other move does. Both units are yours for a few hours, so the order of work is free. We clear the rooms you care about least first and place them properly upstairs while the kitchen and the beds are still standing downstairs. The last load is the one you need that night.
It also means less of your life in boxes. Clothes go on hanging rails and come off them an hour later. The fridge can be emptied in the morning, moved near the end of the slot and switched back on once it has stood upright for a while. In summer, with nothing crossing an open car park, the heat stops being part of the plan.
DEWA, Internet and the Unit Number on Everything
A different unit in the same tower is still a different address. It has its own DEWA premises number, so the DEWA move out and move in requests still apply, and you want power and water live upstairs before the crew starts. Set the old flat's disconnection for the evening, so the lights and the air conditioning keep working while people are still carrying things out.
The internet is the one most people get wrong. Your provider treats it as a relocation to another flat, which means an engineer and an appointment, not a cable moved along the corridor. Book it once the new tenancy is signed. The bank, delivery apps and the access cards all need the new unit number too.
Handing Back the Old Flat, and What the Day Costs
The old unit is still an end of tenancy. Photograph every room once it is empty, keep the dated pictures, and have the flat cleaned before the landlord's inspection, because the security deposit on that unit is separate from the building's permit deposit. Hand back only the cards and remotes for the old flat, and check the building has not cancelled both sets.
On price, an internal move is shorter than one across Dubai, and the vehicle usually comes off the quote when nothing travels by road. What it does not remove is crew hours, wrapping, protection, dismantling and reassembly, and those are most of the work. Tell us both unit numbers, both floors and the lift slot you have been offered. Call 058 135 7375 or request a free quote, and our removal service in Dubai covers the jobs where only the lifting is needed.
