Moving with kids in Dubai is less about boxes than about timing. Children read the house before they read your face, so a home emptying out tells them something whether you explain it or not. Our crews can usually tell in the first few minutes of a job which families have talked to the children and which have not.
This is how we plan the children's side of a move: what to say and when, which room gets packed last, how to keep the school run going while the flat fills with cartons, and where a four year old should be while a wardrobe comes down the stairs.
Tell Them Once the Dates Are Real
Tell children as soon as the dates are fixed, not the night before. A child who hears it early has time to ask the same question six times, which is how young children settle something. A child who hears it late spends moving day working out what is happening while strangers carry the sofa past.
Keep the first conversation short and factual: where you are going, when it happens, what comes with you. The question they actually have is almost never about the new kitchen. It is about the bed, the toys, the cat and the friend two doors down. Say plainly that all of it comes too, then show them the new address on a map. Expect the subject back at bedtime for a fortnight, and answer it the same way each time.
Give Each Child One Real Job
A child with a job is not a child underfoot. Pick something small and genuinely theirs: decorating their own cartons, choosing the ten toys that travel in the car, or filling a backpack for the first night. Our packers will work around a seven year old who is busy with a box of their own, and it buys you an hour of quiet.
Avoid jobs that need a decision they cannot make, like choosing what to give away. On a day with no time for a negotiation, that is exactly what it becomes. Do the clear out a fortnight earlier instead, with them in the room, so the outgrown bike leaves long before the truck arrives.
- Let them decorate or sticker their own boxes
- Ten toys travel in the car, the rest go on the truck
- Pack a small backpack for the first night
- Take a photo of the old room before it empties
Pack Their Room Last and Unpack It First
This is the one order we try never to break on a family move. The children's room stays as it is until the morning of the move, or late the evening before at the earliest. A bedroom stripped three days early means three nights of a child sleeping in a room that already looks like someone has gone.
Say so at the survey, so it is written into the plan rather than remembered on the day. On our home and villa moves the crew loads that room near the truck doors, which means it comes off first at the new address and the bed is built and the toys are out before anyone opens a kitchen carton.
Keeping the School Run Going in Move Week
Dubai school mornings do not pause for a move. If your children use school transport, tell the school and the bus provider as soon as the new address is fixed. The new home may sit on a different route or outside the area the current bus covers, and a new stop is rarely arranged in a few days. A move from Al Barsha to Mudon can change both the route and the pickup time.
Keep two mornings of uniform, school shoes, bags and water bottles out of the cartons altogether, in a labelled bag that lives in the car. Opening boxes at seven in the morning looking for one shoe is a bad start to a long day.
Book the move around the school run, not across it. Buildings hand out service lift slots in windows, and the one you are offered may sit right on top of drop off. Our guide to move in and move out permits in Dubai sets out what both buildings will ask for, and it is worth asking for a mid morning slot while you are at it.
- Tell the school and the bus provider the new address early
- Check whether the new home is on the existing bus route
- Keep two days of uniform and bags out of the boxes
- Ask both buildings for a lift slot away from the school run
Moving Day: Where the Children Should Actually Be
For the loading hours, the honest answer is somewhere else. A flat with a propped front door, a hallway of cartons, stretch wrap, tool bags and a lift held open is not a place for a toddler. If a grandparent, a neighbour in the same community or a nursery can take them from eight until two, take the offer.
If they have to be at home, give them one finished room with the door shut: the room we pack last, with water, snacks and something to watch. Tell the supervisor which door stays closed so nobody walks in with a trolley. Heat matters as well. Stairwells and loading bays warm up quickly, so children should not be waiting in them while the truck fills.
- Arrange childcare for the loading hours if you can
- Keep one closed room with water, snacks and something to do
- Tell the supervisor which door stays shut
- Keep children out of stairwells, lift lobbies and loading bays
- Ask the crew to put blades and tool bags away between uses
The First Night in the New Home
Set the children's room up before you think about your own. Bed built, their own bedding on it, a lamp that works, a few familiar toys out, curtains up if the window faces a street light. A child who falls asleep in a room that looks like their room sleeps. One on a mattress between cartons does not, and neither do you.
Our packing and unpacking service can rebuild that one room while the crew is still carrying in, which is the best possible use of an unpacking team on a family move. Then keep the evening deliberately dull: the same dinner, the same bath, the same book, in a different flat.
The First Fortnight: Routine Before Boxes
Hold the routine even with cartons stacked in the hall. Same wake up, same breakfast, same bedtime. Children judge a new home by whether the ordinary things still happen in it, not by how quickly it is tidy.
Walk them round the building or the community in the first few days: the lift buttons, the pool gate, the park, the shop on the corner. Expect a wobble in week two, when the novelty has worn off and the old home has become the better one in memory. It passes, and it is not a sign the move was wrong.
If your dates are set, request a free quote and tell our surveyor how many children you have and how old they are. It changes the order we pack the rooms in, the crew size we send and the hours we book the lift for.
