Moving a Piano in Dubai: Uprights, Grands and Digital Pianos

A piano decides its own move. How our crews wrap, lift and place uprights, grands and heavy digital pianos in Dubai towers and villas, and how long to leave it standing before you call a tuner.

Movers wrapping an upright piano in blankets in a Dubai living room before lifting it onto a dolly

A piano is the one thing in a Dubai home that sets the terms of its own move. Most of its weight hides inside the frame, the shape argues with every doorway, and the case marks if a strap sits in the wrong place. That is why people look up piano movers Dubai rather than adding a line to a house move quote: the instrument needs its own method, worked out before any truck is booked.

What follows is how our crews go about it, from the questions we ask at the survey to how long the piano should stand before anyone touches it with a tuning lever. Uprights, baby grands, full grands and heavier digital pianos are four different problems, and the building counts for as much as the instrument.

What We Ask Before Quoting a Piano Move

Our first questions are about the instrument, not the address. The make and model tell us the weight and the shape, and photos from the front and the side tell us more than any description. A compact upright and a tall older upright with a solid back are far apart once a crew has to carry one.

Then we work on access at both ends: floor numbers, the size of the service lift, the steps to the front door, how tight the turn is at the top of a villa staircase. If you measure one thing, make it the narrowest doorway the piano has to pass through.

  • Make, model and type of piano, with photos front and side
  • Floor number at both addresses, and whether a lift reaches it
  • The narrowest doorway and any tight staircase turn
  • Where a truck can stand and how far the carry is

Uprights: Tall, Narrow and Heavier Than They Look

An upright carries most of its mass high and towards the back, which is why it feels fine until the moment it tips. We wrap the case in moving blankets, protect the lid, keyboard, corners and pedals, then film the whole thing so nothing slides while it is handled. Castors stay unused: they are made for shifting a piano a few centimetres, not for crossing a lobby.

It then goes onto a padded piano trolley and is strapped on, and from there it travels upright. Stairs are taken one tread at a time, people below carrying and people above holding back, with one of the crew doing nothing but calling each step. A turn halfway up a villa stairwell is where most damage happens, usually because somebody hurried.

Grands and Baby Grands Travel on Their Side

A grand does not move in one piece. With the lid closed and the music desk out, we take off the pedal assembly, remove the leg at the straight side, and lower that side of the body onto a padded skid board while the crew holds the weight. The other two legs come off once it is resting, and every bolt goes into a labelled bag taped to the board.

On the board the piano is blanketed, strapped and moved on its straight edge, the way it is built to be supported. Lid, legs and lyre are wrapped as separate pieces. A baby grand on a board is often narrower and lower than the same piano on its legs, and that is sometimes what lets it into a lift.

Reassembly runs in reverse on the spot where the piano will live, so tell the crew where it belongs before they start. How this sits beside our other specialist jobs is set out on the removal service page.

Digital Pianos Are Lighter, Not Light

A stage piano on a folding stand is a two person lift and a box. A digital piano in a wooden cabinet, with weighted keys and speakers inside, is a different thing, and the furniture around it is the weak point. Those cabinets are built from panels on long screws, so the sides flex and the pedal board hangs on its own fixings.

We lift from the cabinet base, never by the keybed or the music rest, and where a stand comes apart we take it down rather than carry the whole shape through a doorway. Screws are bagged and labelled by panel, the key cover is taped shut, and the keyboard is padded.

Towers and Villas Ask for Different Paperwork

In a tower, the lift decides the plan. Management books the service lift in slots, sets the hours when moving is allowed, and most buildings want an approved move permit and often a refundable deposit before the crew passes the loading bay. A piano makes that slot tighter, because it cannot share the car with boxes.

Villa communities have their own rules at the gate, and a crew without a pass sits outside. What you get back is space: a driveway, a level threshold and no lift to lose. Our move in and move out permits guide sets out what buildings ask for, and we apply before the date is confirmed.

  • A lift slot long enough for the piano on its own
  • Move permits approved at both buildings, deposits paid
  • Gate passes and vehicle details sent to villa security
  • Lift car height and door width checked against the board

Heat, Humidity and the Part of the Job on the Road

Wood, felt and steel strings all respond to the air around them, and a piano sitting in a hot closed vehicle on an August afternoon is being treated badly even if nothing is scratched. We move pianos in a closed truck, load them last so they come off first, and plan the run for the early part of the day in the hot months.

A blanketed piano standing in the sun while a lift is argued over is avoidable, so the lift and the route are agreed before it leaves the room. Our guide to moving in Dubai in summer covers how we shift timings across the hotter months.

Where It Stands in the New Room, and When to Tune It

Choose the spot before the piano arrives, because moving it again later is another job. An inside wall is kinder than an outside one, and the two things to keep it clear of are direct sun through glass and the draught from an air conditioning outlet. Many Dubai apartments have both on the same wall, which rules it out.

Then leave it alone. The case is settling into a room with its own temperature and humidity, and tuning in the first few days is usually wasted, because the pitch keeps moving as the instrument adjusts. Playing it is fine. Give it a few weeks, then book your tuner.

  • Stand it against an inside wall where you can
  • Keep it clear of direct sun and air conditioning outlets
  • Use castor cups on tile or polished floors
  • Let the room settle before you book the tuner

Booking a Piano Move With Us

Send the make and model, the floor at both ends and a couple of photos through the quote form, or call 058 135 7375. We survey in person or on video, check stairs, doorways and lift against the instrument, then put one fixed price in writing. If the piano has to wait between two tenancies it can go into storage rather than stand in an empty flat with the power off.

FAQs

Quick Answers

How Many People Does It Take to Move an Upright Piano?

More than most people expect, and the number comes from the access rather than the weight alone. On a flat route with a working service lift, a small crew and a padded trolley handle it. Add a staircase, a tight turn or a long carry from the truck and we send more people, because each of them has to be able to stop and hold.

Do You Have to Take a Grand Piano Apart to Move It?

Yes, for anything beyond a short carry on one level. The legs, the pedal lyre and usually the music desk come off, and the body travels on its straight side on a padded skid board. That is the shape the instrument is built to be supported in, and it is also what gets a grand into a lift car.

Can a Piano Go up in a Normal Apartment Lift?

Sometimes, and it depends on the car rather than the building. An upright usually fits a service lift if the ceiling is high enough and the doors are wide enough to turn it in. A grand on a board needs measuring first, so we check the car and the lobby route before the date is set.

How Long After Moving Should I Wait to Tune My Piano?

Give it a few weeks rather than a few days. The piano is adjusting to a new room with a different temperature and humidity, and a tuning done straight away tends to drift as it settles. Play it as normal, keep it off a sunny wall and away from the air conditioning, then book the tuner.
